The Healing Ministries Committee is a group of individuals who are united by gratitude for the gifts we have received from God through others, especially the friendship and support we gain from Lafayette Christian Church. Our aim in working together is to help extend Christ’s compassion, love and healing touch to some of those outside our community who have critical needs.

The growing disparity in health and wealth between the rich and poor and the efficiency of the media and internet in bringing us news of crises across the globe mean that it is easy to become overwhelmed by the problems around us. But we are emboldened by the parable of the Good Samaritan to believe that we can each make a difference, even on a one-to-one basis.

By sharing our concerns and talents we can enhance our effectiveness, especially by also working through other agencies that understand the special needs of our neighbors, near and far, and can mobilize the resources needed to provide solutions to the toughest of challenges. Examples of recent collaborations are:

  • Malawi Project - partnering with churches and communities in Malawi to provide funding and assistance for much needed education, women's cooperatives and other life-giving projects while creating mutually inspiring and informative relations person-to-person
  • Juvenile Hall Auxiliary - bringing touches of supportive home life to troubled teenagers.

  • Winter Nights Program – providing shelter for families made homeless in Contra Costa County

  • STAND – supporting victims of domestic violence

  • Habitat for Humanity – building affordable houses for the homeless

  • Week of Compassion – providing relief, refugee, and development assistance through the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada.  In addition to responding to the suffering of others through disaster response, humanitarian aid, sustainable development and the promotion of mission opportunities, much effort is currently going into response to the the horrific devastation caused by the earthquake in Haiti.

  • Contra Costa Food Bank – working to end hunger and increase access to affordable, nutritious food for low-income individuals and families through a comprehensive group of programs that combat hunger and its causes.

  • Church World Services– working together with partners to eradicate hunger and poverty and to promote peace and justice around the world.

  • Global Ministries – providing medical services and seed funds for economic stainability in some of the poorest nations across the globe

We would be delighted if you could join us, whether you have additional concerns to share with us, or you wish to pitch in on one of our current projects. For further information, call the church office at 925-283-3804.
